Tuesday 14th April 2009
An occupational therapist has been involved in the creation of a new device designed to help young disabled people to read.
The mechanism was produced by Jan Nicholson and a team at Rolls-Royce, the Derby Evening Telegraph reports.
With the assistance of the gadget, youngsters can turn the pages of books without being aided by other people.
Ms Nicholson came up with idea a decade ago and it has now been patented.
She said that the device is primarily aimed at young children who are just beginning to read.
The medical professional added: "The whole focus of my job as an occupational therapist for disabled children is to find ways for them to participate in the everyday activities of their peers."
Recently, the gadget was presented to a patient at Derby City General Hospital, which is run by the Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - an organisation that employs a total of around 7,000 people.
