Games console can help with treatments, occupational therapist says

Tuesday 10th March 2009

The Nintendo Wii games console can help with patient treatment, according to one expert.

Commenting on the device, occupational therapist Hanna Rollings said that it can help to create a stimulating environment, the North West Evening Mail reports.

She stated: "Something like the Wii is very good because it's not just physical needs, it's social - it stimulates people's creativity."

The expert went on to suggest that when they use the device, patients input a certain amount of sensory involvement and use their intellect, adding: "So it's a lot more than just a physical thing."

Ms Rollings works at Risedale Residential Home in Barrow, which has been enabling people to make use of the Wii consoles.

Last month, the Ely Standard reported that physiotherapists at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend are using the Wii to help patients regain their flexibility.

The equipment was purchased with the help of donations made to the medical centre.
