Govt response to report gets support of occupational therapists
Wednesday 26th November 2008
The government's response to a review of the health of the working age population has been welcomed by occupational health doctors.
The report, which was entitled Working for a Healthier Tomorrow, included a number of proposals that the Labour administration has given its backing to.
Among them was the suggestion that the health benefits of employment should be promoted to the whole population.
Commenting on the government's response, Dr Tony Stevens, president of the Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM), said the he is "delighted" that efforts are being made to espouse the benefits of working to the population.
He stated: "The positive links between work and health need to be recognised by all. Too many people are still told that they can't work, when with specialist occupational health support they can."
With roots tracing back to 1935, the SOM is a body for registered medical practitioners who are involved in the practice of occupational medicine.
