Gloucestershire cardiac project 'a success'

Friday 19th September 2008

A project being run in Gloucestershire to assist in the recovery of heart attack patients has been dubbed a success.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) recently praised the initiative, which is being trialled by hospitals within the county, thisisgloucestershire.co.uk reports.

In partnership with Gloucestershire Heart Failure Service, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's Cardiac Rehabilitation Service has been developing a multi-disciplinary cardiac rehabilitation programme for patients with chronic heart failure.

Among the medical professionals involved in the scheme are physiotherapists, dieticians, nurses and occupational therapists.

"We offer rehabilitation to people with coronary heart disease, this could be people with angina, or who have had a heart attack, surgery or a coronary artery bypass," stated Eve Scarle, senior physiotherapist for cardiac rehabilitation at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Organisers are now attempting to secure funding to enable the programme to continue on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, the BHF recently criticised cardiac rehabilitation services in the UK, suggesting that they are all understaffed.
